Artist: Utagawa Kunisada III (歌川国貞)

Note: This posthumous design was
originally issued in a slightly different
color scheme circa September 1918
when Uzaemon XV played this role at
the Yokohama-za. The print is signed
"Kunimatsu," but that is believed to be
a pseudonym adopted by the publisher
to hide the fact that it recycles Kunisada
III's original design a few months after
Kunisada's death and is not suggestive
that the artist in question was Utagawa
Kunimatsu (歌川國松).

Note: This print is similar in format to the series of
prints designed by Kunisada III between 1917 and
1920, and was probably issued by the publisher in a
limited attempt to continue the series after Kunisada
III's death in 1920. It is also possible that it is a
posthumous reissue of an unknown Kunisada III
design.

December 1919. Depending on the precise publication date
of this print, it is possible that Shunsen modeled this print

Note: It is unclear if this is a woodblock print, a watercolor
drawing, or a hand-colored keyblock print for an
unpublished design. Uzaemon XV died on May 6, 1945
at age 72. He first played the role of Kataoka Naojirô
in
Tokyo at the Kabuki-za in April 1910, and his .final
Tokyo appearance in this role was at the Kabuki-za in
June 1943. This print, however, closely resembles a

Note: Uzaemon XV first played the role of Tatsugorô in this
play in Tokyo at the Kabuki-za in January 1911. Although
Uzaemon XV's final Tokyo appearance in this role was in
January 1941, it is possible that Gakô based this print on
one of Uzaemon XV's prior performances.
