Artist: Miyake Hanayama (三宅花山)
Medium: Lithograph
Personal Collection

Note: Sadanji II also performed the role at the Kabuki-za in
February 1926 and February 1928, and at the Teikoku Gekijô
in June 1929.  I cannot rule out the possibility that this print
reflects one of those  performances.  Kôshirô VII, however,
did not appear in those productions, so if Hanayama's prints
of  Kôshirô VII and Sadanji II are from the same production
of Kanjinchô, it would have been the March 1925 production
at the Kabuki-za

Note: Uzaemon XV, Chûsha VII, and Sadanji II also

possible that this print reflects Sadanji II's performance in
that later production.

modeled this print after Sadanji II's 1919 performance.

Note: It is unclear if this is a woodblock print, a watercolor
drawing, or a hand-colored keyblock print for an
unpublished design.  Sadanji II died on February 23, 1940
at age 61.  He first played the role of Yashaô in Tokyo at
the Meiji-za in May 1911.  Although Sadanji's final Tokyo
appearance in this role was at the Shinbashi Enbujô in
February 1940, it is possible that Gakô based this print on
one of Sadanji II's prior performances.
