Tokyo at the Kabuki-za in April 1910, and his .final
Tokyo appearance in this role was at the Kabuki-za in
June 1943.  This print, however, closely resembles a

Ichikawa Jukai III  (市川寿海; 市川壽海) as Kataoka Naojirô (片岡直次郎)

Bandô Jusaburô III (阪東壽三 郎; 坂東寿三郎) as Kurayami no Ushimatsu (暗闇の丑松)

Play:  Yuki no Yûbe Iriya no Azemichi (雪暮夜入谷畦道)
Performance Place: ?
Performance Date: ?
Artist: Hasegawa Sadanabu III (長谷川貞信)
Print Date: 06/20/83 (reissue date)
Personal Collection

Note: The original Sadanobu III print was presumably made between February 1949 (when Ichikawa
Sumizô VI took the name Jukai III) and  September 1954 (the month that Jusaburô III died).  Jukai III
frequently performed the role of Kataoka Naojirô during the 1950s.  While the pair frequently acted
opposite each other and were nicknamed "Futatsu Kotobuki" (the two Kotobuki) because both
actors had the ideogram Kotobuki in their first names), I have been unable to find a specific
performance with involving both actors.  It is possible that it is a mitate-e.
