Tokyo-za in
May-June 1946, although
never
opposite Sadanji

one of these productions
toured

Note: Kikugorô VI, Mitsugorô VII, and
Kichiemon I
appear to have performed their respective
roles in the
same Tokyo production on only one occasion,
namely, at
the Ichimura-za in November 1915.
Whether all three
performed together at some later date
outside of Tokyo is
not known to me at this time. The
only other time
Kikugorô VI played the role of Sakuramaru
in Tokyo was
at the Kabuki-za in January 1934.

Note: Kikugorô VI performed this role in Tokyo
multiple times between 1906 and 1941. Based on
similar magazine prints by Chikamine, this print
most likely reflects Kikugorô VI's performance at
the Shintomi-za in February 1922, Ichimura-za in
October 1922, or at the Ichimura-za in Febraury
1927.

Artist: Ota Gatô (太田雅光)
Personal Collection
Note: Kikugorô VI first performed the role of Hanako in
Tokyo at the Shintomi-za in September 1912. His final
performance in Tokyo was at the Tokyo-za in January
1948. Without knowing the date of the print, it is
difficult to know the precise performance depicted.
There
are, however, costume similarities to a photograph from a
December 1938 production at the Kabuki-za. Since
Kiugorô VI died in July 1949, it is likely the print was
made on or before 1949, or perhaps as a memorial print.

Note: Information on the source of this image is lost, but
it is believed to be a woodblock print. Kikugorô VI
first
performed his own version of this role in Tokyo at the
Ichimura-za in February 1922. He reprised the role in
Tokyo on at least 13 subsequent occasions, and gave
his final performance in the role at the Kabuki-za in
Osaka in March 1949, four months before his death on
July 10, 1949 at age 65. His last appearance in Tokyo
in this role was at the Shinbashi Enbujô in January
1949, although it is possible that this print depicts
Kikugorô VI in an earlier production.
