MARCH 1957

Performance Place: ?
Performance Date: ?
Print Date: 03/1957
Artist: Mitsui Atsuo (三井淳生)

Note: While it is not clear what character is depicted in this print, it
is possible that it depicts Gonjûrô III as Tarôkaja (太郎冠者) in
Migawari Zazen (身替座禅), which he performed as part of his
shûmei at the Kabuki-za in Tokyo on March 3, 1956.

AUGUST 1967

Lady in the Cloud [Likely an ascribed title]

Play: ?
Performance Place: ?
Performance Date: ?
Print Date: 08/10/67
Artist: Mitsui Atsuo (三井淳生)
Personal Collection (#11/100)

Note: This print is a cut down version of a 1957 print design of
Kawarazaki Gonjûrô III (河原崎権十郎; 河原崎權十郎) with
less coloring.  This copy was issued in 1967 inside a paper mat
that obscures the printing information set forth in the right
margin of the print.  The Honolulu Museum of Art has a copy
which it dates to c. 1957.  However, that print appears to have
been photographed inside of the mat and likely also bears a 1967
date.  Moreover, the dating of the Honolulu copy was probably
made based on the date of larger 1957 version of that design.  If,
however, Honolulu Museum of Art's copy actually lacks printing
information in the right margin, then the print shown here is
likely an 1967 reissue of that c. 1957 print.

Reminiscences I (思い出 I)

Print Date:  01/1999
Artist: Tsuruya Kôkei (弦屋光溪)
Personal Collection (#15/72)
Note: 35 copies from the edition of 72 were never printed.  Given
the difficulty in photographing this print in view of its large size, I
have used the image on the Kôkei website in lieu of one of my
own numbered copy.  This print contains larger versions of the
following actors' faces (left to right starting at the top row):

1. Kataoka Takao I (片岡孝夫) as Tsurigane Gonsuke (釣鐘権助) in
Sakurahime Azuma Bunshô (桜姫東文章), Kabuki-za, Tokyo (03/1981).

Kurotegumi Kuruwa no Tatehiki (黒手組曲輪達引), Kabuki-za, Tokyo (07/02/1982).
3. Nakamura Ganjirô II (中村鴈治郎) as Kamiya Jihê (紙屋治兵衛) in

UNKNOWN DATE

Kawarasaki Gonjûrô (河原崎権十郎;
河原崎權十郎) as Saitô Sanemori (斎藤実盛)

Play:  Genpei Nunobiki no Taki (源平布引瀧)
Performance Place: ?
Performance Date: ?
Print Date: ?
Artist: Natori Shunsen (名取春仙)
Medium: Hand-colored keyblock print (版画源画)?

Note: It is unclear if if this is Gonjûrô II or III.  I
have not found a post-War performance with
either in the role of Saitô Sanemori, although it
was a favorite role of Gonjûrô II before the War.
Although purporting to be hanga genga in the
2002 and 1991 Shunsen catalogs, it appears
to be a finished painting and I have not found
a hand-colored keyblock print for this design.
